Teaching Bio:

Emily has taught writing around the world to students and writers of all ages. She currently teaches writing to undergraduates as a lecturer in the undergraduate writing program at Columbia University. She previously taught as an adjunct assistant professor of writing at NYU. She has taught creative writing to young writers at Writopia, The Loft, and the Columbia University High School Program.

Previously, as a Thomas J. Watson Fellow, Emily spent a year performing poetry while collaborating with spoken word communities in Nepal, India, New Zealand, Australia, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Italy, and Ireland. During this time, she taught young writers with organizations including the Word Warriors in Kathmandu and the Children’s Art Museum of Nepal, where she was an artist-in-residence.

She has implemented creative writing curricula in her classrooms both as a high school English teacher on Cape Cod and a second grade teacher in New York City. During her time as an undergraduate at Wesleyan University, she taught creative writing at the Kibera School for Girls in Nairobi and helped develop and implement an arts curriculum for the after school program.

Emily has also worked with students as a writing consultant at the Columbia Writing Center, as a college essay specialist, and as a freelance creative writing instructor. She’s often hired and is available to teach creative writing workshops to adults, teenagers, and young writers.
